I was so high.

At the end of 2009, I was set to see Josh Wink perform twice within 3 weeks. The excitement levels were high. Tickets to Summanights in Sydney for New Years Eve had been arranged along with flights and accommodation. A few days away with great friends, overseas, warm weather and dancing to my favourite DJ in the world (with a minimum 3 hour set!) seemed like a pretty damn good way to say goodbye to the “noughties” (especially the last 2 years) and bring in the new decade.

Unfortunately the dreaded “house curse” set in. We arrived at the venue (Home) around 12.30am and was surprised to see a queue for a ticketed event. A small police crew were around, and to cut a long story short, everyone waiting outside was eventually told to clear the area. AU$130 per ticket, plus flights and accommodation… Thanks to the Australian Authorities/Club owners for making us waste time and money, flying to your country and ruining the entire trip. Were you not expecting people to party on new years eve? Idiots. (more…)

Bumpin’

Last night, the 5th of the 5th 2007, was the 5th birthday of Ange’s Bump party – literally one of the longest running and definitely one of the last few worthwhile parties the Auckland club scene has. I was honered to be a guest DJ on this special event, doing the 12.30am-2.30am slot. Turning up to Ink club around 11pm and the place was already starting to pack out nicely, a rare sight, since the club doesn’t usually start to pick up until after midnight.

Bump had been on a hiatus since the end of 2006, and punters had obviously missed it. I had packed a completely fresh record/cd bag with a load of tunes that I hadn’t played for ages and new gems recently discovered and was ready lay it down, and the crowd was one of the best I’ve witnessed – responsive and willing to stick through any twists and turns thrown at them.

A jackin’ set from Kit had everyone warmed up, I jumped on with my recent rejuvinated excitement for dj’ing again, and threw around a mixed bag such as the bleepy jacked up funk of David Squillace’s “Sukkin Mutik”, old-school DJ Sneak remixing Armand Van Helden’s “Ultrafunkula”, the brilliantly twisted farting Switch remix of “Jacques Your Body” and even some acid in the form of Josh Wink’s new “Acid Tonic”.

A great night and easily one of the most enjoyable sets I’ve played in some time… the night continued with Ange serving up her trademark style.
